First created by Ida B. Wells in the 1880's, it was the most radical Black advocacy newspaper of its time. Ida B. Wells took over the paper, and became of one the best, most fierce,Black activist journalist in the country. in that spirit, we are recreating the Memphis Free Speech as a 21st century blog to push for similar ideas that we believe that she would have supported. were she alive at this time.

So much has happened since we, my wife JoNina and myself, moved to Memphis. We did not know a soul here, and she complained that there was seemingly "nothing to do" as far as activist work. Well, I always say what watch out what you ask for, because you just might get it. We did a conference last June, called "Let's Organize the Hood: Memphis Black Power Conference", and it has been nonstop ever since. It has especially been busy in the police brutality fightback movement. Over 17 people primarily Black civilians have been killed by Memphis cops since last February, in a number of brutal and highly questionable cases. The cops always claimed "self defense", and it is always hurriedly covered up as "justifiable homicide" by the police, District Attorney, and other members of the judicial establishment. They have killed six people since January 2013, and this police death squad is still at work. The struggle therefore goes on.
